About ECHORN

The Eastern Caribbean Health Outcomes Research Network, or ECHORN, is a first-of-its-kind regional research network. ECHORN generates action-oriented, community-engaged research on chronic disease. The network structure, which includes a consortium of community stakeholders, fellowships, and mentorship programs, fosters collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and training.

The ECHORN research portfolio is anchored by the ECHORN cohort study, which follows 3,000 adults in Barbados, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The study teams are examining the risk and protective factors for the development of chronic disease. The cohort study is led by five principal investigators: Dr. Peter Adams (The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus), Dr. Cruz Nazario-Delgado (University of Puerto Rico), Dr. Maxine Nunez (University of the Virgin Islands), Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith (Yale University), and Dr. Rohan Maharaj (The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus). The study was launched in 2013 and study teams are now in the second wave of data collection.

Explore ECHORN includes aggregated data collected during the first wave of the ECHORN cohort study.
